a life in perfect balance

Every Moment Of My Life Has Had A …..

I recently moved from a big city to a really small country town in Queensland Australia and my house is about 5 minutes from a beach. Chances are, when I've written this  that that's where I am. Feet in the sand, staring at the ocean and working out whether or not I want to go in. Strange thing here is that the water is really warm - like a bath. To be honest - it can feel a bit creepy on your skin. So - I don't always go in.
I'll have food on my clothes for absolute sure and my care factor about that is a big ZERO.

I'm BECK!

hello,

Marriages
I adore music.  I cannot imagine a life without music.  Life is Music.

Life is food too – but Life is music.

I basically have a soundtrack for every single part of my life.

My first 8 years were gospel music and hymns.  Let me loudly scream the disclaimer that this was not of my doing.

But – if you be born into a highly religious family – with a father who has just become a pastor and a born again Christian….those majestic songs are the backdrop of your life.

Don’t get me wrong I sang those hymns loudly and terribly off-key.  A+ for enthusiasm.  F- for Delivery.

At about – mmmm – let me think – 8 or 9.  The heavens opened up and delivered me…

“Hotel California”

My gorgeous best friend’s brother sat me down – with a bottle of Coke (yep-the green bottles), a packet of Twisties and a huge pair of 70’s headphones on my head.

I was about to experience the holy trio of contraband.

And he was hanging to see my reaction.

During that amazing intro to Hotel California…he said I shut my eyes.  I lay down right next to the stereo.  I abandoned the Coke and Twisties and I lay there for the whole entire album without saying a word.

He then played me…these whole albums:
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.
Exile on Main Tapestryicago V
Teaser and the Firecat
Young, Gifted and Black.
Tapestry.

And the piece de resistance at the time:
An album by the Aussie band Skyhooks that had been banned in all sorts of places due to explicit language.

All in one day and night.

From that day forward, every single song takes me to what I was doing at the time I first heard it.

Tonight as I was stirring the Thai beef curry a song started playing.

And I was right back – actually not to when I first heard it – but to a significant moment when I heard it.

Internet dating – way back in the ’90s.  A guy told me this was his favourite song.

I thought it was a really romantic song. As you do.  And met up with him.  Yadda Yadda.

Anyways – as I listened today, one line stood out for me.

Wishing it had stood out to me back in the day – but that’s another email. 🙂

It’s Hunters & Collectors (another Aussie band).

Throw Your Arms Around Me

I think it’s supposed to be a love song.

I’ll put a link to the lyrics down below – because they are REALLY troubling.  And probably a sign I should have taken notice of.

But – tonight – there’s one line that hit me in bits.

I will squeeze the life out of you.

I mean – wtaf.

And then I realised that it is something that people seem to get a bit confused.

That relationships means possession.

That marriage means unquestioning devotion.

That when you get married, your personal joy and wants and needs should be left at the altar.

That marriage is sacrifice.

That marriage means loss of the self.

I’ve certainly been in marriages/relationships where life was squeezed out of me.

The question that needs to be answered is:

Is your partner doing this or are expectations doing this?  Are you subconsciously sacrificing too much in the name of love?  Because you’ve been told that what you do.

It’s a question that needs answering before you make any major life-altering decisions.

And one I help couples make every day.

Do you feel like your relationship is suffocating you?
